The Secret to Student Engagement Is…Religious Affinity?

Is the secret to student engagement…religious affinity?

Reported by EAB, 190,000 survey responses from the Wall Street Journal ranked colleges and universities on their student engagement, including how challenged and inspired students feel on campus.

The top 5 scoring institutions (and 8 of the top 11) were religiously affiliated, including Dordt College, Oklahoma Baptist University, Cedarville University, Harding University and Texas Christian University.

These findings have created the question of whether when a student self-identifies with a religious tradition, and feels an inherent commonality with many of the students around them, is it easier to feel a part of something bigger than yourself?

The takeaway? Regardless of our institutions’ affiliations and identities, how do we create a clarion call around our respective mission – one that our students can truly feel a part of, and one that they feel truly engaged in the pursuit of?
