Will Duolingo surpass TOEFL as the standard for our international student’s English testing?
Reported by Inside Higher Ed, in the past 2 years, Duolingo has gone from their English language test being accepted by dozens of institutions up to more than 3,000 colleges today.
In response, ETS, the maker of the TOEFL test, has released a new version called TOEFL Essentials, which will cost half the price of the regular TOEFL exam, but still twice Duolingo’s cost.
The takeaway? Are the international students we’re admitting via their Duolingo exam scores succeeding as well as our TOEFL admits? In that data likely lies our answer to the future market winner.
