What will the effects of our new “waitlist” nation be?

Reported by Inside Higher Ed, test-optional admission decisions are up drastically due to the pandemic, with 20% of students nationally currently sitting on a wait list. This number is even greater for students of color, at 29%.

The takeaway? While test-optional admissions have done a wonderful job of raising hope among students nationwide, what happens for those whose ivy league dreams get rudely dashed? Will this deter their enrollment plans? Will they receive the harsh news too late to make other plans? Are we providing unrealistic hope that’s a net loss for our institutions who could actually provide a better and more supportive environment for these right-fit students?
