Putting a Value Tag on Colleges

Can we put a value tag on colleges?

Reported by Inside Higher Ed, the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce has released their first attempt, aptly titled, “A First Try at ROI: Ranking 4,500 Colleges”. This study uses College Scorecard data to attempt to rank domestic institutions based on their ROI. But by adjusting the tables yourself, you quickly learn that an institution can claim ROI a lot of different ways. Median 10-year earnings? Median 40-year earnings? Return over price? Return over debt?

The takeaway? There are many different ways to quantify the purely economic outcomes of a college education, but better and more shareable data is going to make the ROI equation of a college education more knowable than ever before. Does your institution have a good story to share?

May you continue to fight the good enrollment growth fight at your institution today, and we’ll see you again tomorrow.
