Mental health as an admittance factor

Could a student’s psychological challenges be seen as an admittance factor?

Reported by Inside Higher Ed, New College at Florida was allegedly red-flagging applications from students who mentioned psychological challenges in their admissions essays for further review, and they are conducting an outside investigation.

But this does bring up serious ethical and legal concerns about mental health, disability, and admissions policies.

The takeaway? It’s important to have conversations with your enrollment team, and likely new policy creations, to make sure they’re not unknowingly discriminating against a disability.
