Is the hostile political climate leading to a surge in HBCU enrollment?

Reported by Education Dive, one-third of historically black colleges and universities have seen record enrollment numbers within the past three years. Some theorize that recent public philanthropic gifts for HBCUs has ushered in a new understanding of the underfunding issues some HBCU’s have which has helped shine light on these institutions and the students they serve.

Many also believe that a surge in hate-bias incidents at predominantly white institutions has led to students of color seeking out safer institutions with more inclusive environments like HBCU’s can offer.

The takeaway? Do students of color see your institution as a safe option? And what can you do to make sure your campus is truly inclusive, not just because you want it to be, but because of everything you’ve done to operationalize it.

May you continue to fight the good enrollment growth fight at your institution today, and we’ll see you again tomorrow.
