D.C. Leads the Nation in Student Debt

D.C. leads the nation in student debt

Reported by Inside Higher Ed, by the end of 2020, the average loan balance in the District of Columbia was $54,982, with a full 16% of the D.C. population sitting with an outstanding student loan.

This compares to North Dakota’s average student loan balance coming in at about half, at $28,402 per borrower. Similarly coming in at half of the population percentage, only 8% of Hawaiian residents have outstanding student loans.

The takeaway? Will D.C.’s residents in particular look to the new administration for what was a hot topic during this past election cycle, and get any of the student loan relief they’re likely hoping for?
