Could Pell grant eligibility open up to 8-week programs?

Reported by Higher Ed Dive, as Congress is determining whether or not to allow Pell Grants to cover short-term academic programs, specifically those that lead to a postsecondary credential, online-only programs are currently absent from consideration.

The theory being here that to these lawmakers, “online” programs are lumped in mentally with “for-profit”, which are lumped in mentally with poor-performing institutions.

The takeaway? This Pell grant expansion could be a huge boon for short-term programs and new credentialing pathways for higher education. But excluding online-only short-term programs from this potential Pell grant expansion will only ensure that fewer working adults will be able to take advantage of them.
