California’s new free online skills-based community college

California is about to launch their new free online skills-based community college, Calbright.

Reported by Education Dive, Calbright will offer three academic pathways, including medical coding, information technology support and cybersecurity. Today, these courses do not offer credit that can be transferred to other colleges. Instead, the college offers job placement assistance upon completion through their employer partners.

The takeaway? Unlike a traditional community college pathway that feeds into a traditional undergraduate program, Calbright is currently pursuing a clear alternative. One where the good-paying job attained quickly is the end game. A free alternative to our current model. We’ll see if students decide to give it a try.

May you continue to fight the good enrollment growth fight at your institution today, and we’ll see you again tomorrow.
