Are non-disclosure agreements coming for higher ed?
Reported by Inside Higher Ed, University of Alabama system employees were recently asked to sign a confidentiality agreement, prohibiting them from speaking to non-system employees about their non-public work. This is potentially in response to a local publication that has been reporting on financial irregularities out of the institution.
The takeaway? The limitations of free speech and what free speech actually means continue to be tested at our institutions. From what is safe speech vs. free speech. And loudly insisting/threatening employees to be careful about what they share. These things may legally feel appropriate, and yet will continue to rub many the wrong way in terms of feeling inherently in reversal to what higher education is about.
