Are “free college” plans over?

Will states be able to afford their generous “free tuition” plans any longer?

Reported by Education Dive, while free tuition policies have been gaining both popularity and policy across the country over the last several years, will states be able to afford them now?

Coronavirus’ impact on tax revenues and therefore, state budgets, will likely hit higher ed, and hard. And federal stimulus funding may not be enough to nearly cover the loss.

The takeaway? With unemployment insurance, health care, and basic welfare services getting priority treatment right now, where will that leave higher ed? Non “essential”?
